9 Essential Qualities for a Midlife Renaissance

What-is-a-midlife-Renaissance-2

I've been thinking a lot about midlife recently and wondering what would most help others to go from midlife crisis to midlife renaissance. I have come up with 9 essential qualities for a midlife renaissance and will share them over the next few days so there's not one overly long wordy post. I'm wordy enough as it is!

When we feel completely fulfilled in each of these 9 areas of life, we will find ourselves enjoying a midlife renaissance. Below you will find a description of the first three qualities along with some journaling prompts to help you explore each quality more deeply.

What is a midlife renaissance?

Imagine a dormant seed buried beneath layers of soil. As midlife arrives, the seed receives the nurturing touch of sunshine and rain, prompting it to burst forth with vitality (one of the key qualities!) During a midlife renaissance, you will experience a rejuvenation of spirit, a newfound vision for your life and a reconnection to your most authentic self.

Like the acorn that becomes a mighty oak, a midlife renaissance heralds the start of something extraordinary. It symbolizes a period of personal growth, self-discovery, and the pursuit of dreams that may have been dormant or overlooked for years or decades. A midlife renaissance can illuminate one's purpose, revealing new possibilities while casting away the shadows of doubt and uncertainty that tend to plague our youth.

What are the first three essential qualities of a midlife renaissance?

1. Creativity: Midlife can be a time when women feel a renewed sense of self-expression and exploration. Engaging in creative pursuits allows you to tap into you unique talents, passions, and imagination, fostering personal growth and fulfillment. I define a creative pursuit as so much more than making art. You might love cooking, gardening, interior design, dance, writing, or photography. A creative pursuit is one that invites you to get curious, connect to child-like wonder and engage in play just for the fun of it.

Journaling prompts to explore creativity:

  • Do you feel inspired and motivated to create often?
  • Do you feel like you have original ideas or a steady flow of new ideas?
  • Have you found your own creative voice or style?
  • Are you inspired by your environment: home, neighborhood, community?

2. Adventure: Midlife often brings a desire for new experiences and a sense of adventure. You may seek to challenge yourself, step out of you comfort zones, and embark on exciting journeys or pursue long-held dreams. Adventure in midlife often brings a much needed shift in perspective. Sometimes that adventure is external and involves being out in the world. But the adventure can also be internal as you travel to the inner regions of your being and consciousness. That adventure could be physical and related to your health, mental and related to emotions or spiritual in nature.

Journaling prompts to explore adventure:

  • Do you love travel? Local? Around your area? Around the world?
  • Do you like to try new things whether that is food, learning something new or mastering a skill?
  • Would you say your current adventures are internal or external?

3. Connection: Building and nurturing meaningful relationships become increasingly important in midlife. You will often want to seek deeper connections with friends, family, romantic partners, or your communities. Now more than ever you value supportive and authentic connections that bring you joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging. In Arthur C. Brooks book Strength to Strength he writes that it is essential in the 2nd half of life to have at least two connections outside of our marriage/romantic partnership in order to navigate midlife feeling more fulfilled and satisfied.

Journaling prompts to explore connection:

  • Do you have a deep, meaningful connection with at least one other person?
  • Are you part of a community that nourishes and supports you?
  • Do you actively work on your relationships and especially your friendships with others?

Which of these three qualities speaks to you most right now? Do you need support in this area or are you feeling completely satisfied and delighted?

In order to successfully navigate midlife, it's essential to be clear about what you want your life to look like and feel like. Without that clarity, we can get lost in the murky middle between a midlife crisis and midlife renaisssance.

Come back tomorrow for part 2 where we will explore the themes of curiosity, purpose and emotions.

Let me know in the comments below which of these three qualities spoke to you today?
