Video title: Painted Papers with Purpose: DIY Handmade Collage Papers Part Two Using Acrylic Inks Video URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rcOL0OldlE Video language: English (auto-generated) -------------------------------- [0:01] : Good morning, my creative friends, and welcome to Painting in Your PJs with [0:06] : Manette. I'm Dr. Minnette Ryarden, and I am so excited to welcome you, whether [0:11] : you have been joining me for a while or maybe this is your first time stopping [0:16] : by. So painting in your PJs is all about how do we use expressive arts, narrative [0:23] : arts, playing with paint and image and collage as tools for self-discovery on [0:30] : our midlife journey. I deeply believe that midlife is not a crisis. It's an opportunity for a renaissance and art [0:37] : was the thing that really helped me personally reconnect with my purpose, [0:42] : sort of forge a new path forward as well as healing. so much of the past and the [0:48] : old stories that I have carried for oftentimes decades. And I know I'm not [0:55] : alone on this journey. And this year we have been focusing on what I'm calling the paper doll chronicles. We have made [1:02] : a lot of paper dolls over the last six months. And this month we are pausing [1:07] : from doll making to create our own painted papers. Last week we worked with [1:12] : acrylic paints. Today I'm going to be working with acrylic inks which are playful, very flowy and fluid. You can't [1:21] : have a lot of control over them. And we're going to make a happy mess and see [1:26] : what kind of magic we can create on the page. I deeply believe that the more [1:31] : that we use our materials, the better we get at learning how to use them. The more we access that innate sense of [1:39] : childlike wonder and the spirit of play, then the easier it is to really get [1:47] : connected and have that energy and spirit of [1:54] : youthful exuberance instead of the constraint and energy of perfectionism. [2:02] : So, welcome again. If you're joining me, pop into the chat and say hello. Super [2:08] : excited to have you here with me live. Good morning, Lorraine. [2:14] : And if you're catching the replay, let me know in the comments below, right? I love knowing that you stopped by. Give [2:22] : the video a like. If you love what I shared today, please do subscribe. This really helps us keep the channel [2:28] : growing. It keeps me inspired. and your comments mean the world to me. In fact, Lorine is so good about leaving me [2:35] : little love notes in the comments. So, I love it when you just drop me a couple [2:40] : of words and say what you thought about the video. So, thanks for being here. I [2:46] : am going to turn my screen around and we're going to talk about what we're [2:52] : going to be doing today and we're going to dive in and play. We may not spend a whole hour. Most of these episodes are [2:58] : about an hour. You know, it's so easy to create piles of painty papers and then [3:04] : you start to wonder, well, what do you do with them? So, today we are playing [3:10] : with acrylic inks. I've got a few different kinds here. I've got the [3:15] : Daylor Ry brand. I usually try to buy these when they're on sale. And same [3:21] : with the um this is the Artist Loft, which is the Michaels brand of acrylic [3:28] : inks. I enjoy working with both. Of course, the the Daylor Brownie are are [3:34] : quite fabulous. And I picked out a palette. You can see I've got some blues. I've got some yellows. This is a [3:40] : really dark indigo. I've got a little bit of white. And then my favorite red [3:46] : earth color. A lot of these have been well used and well loved and they may or may not still [3:52] : have some juice in them. So, we will see. And I also have a plastic tray. [3:58] : This isn't necessary, but I tend to get a little painty and messy when I'm using [4:06] : acrylic inks. And I forgot to grab fabric today. And I was going to paint [4:12] : up some fabric. So, I may pop off in a minute and go grab some fabric [4:19] : and uh because it's really fun to use the acrylic inks on fabric. And like last week, I just grabbed a bunch of [4:27] : different papers. I even grabbed a couple of sheets of this kind of shiny [4:32] : photo paper to see what the inks might do. I've got just a big stack of just [4:37] : kind of like plain printer paper. It's called sulfite paper. It's nice for [4:43] : creating art on. Excuse me, my voice is still warming up this morning. [4:49] : And I've got some of that heavyduty tissue paper that I talked about last week. So, I have a variety of different [4:56] : papers to play with and experiment with. And then I grabbed some stencils and a [5:03] : few different stamps to see what we could maybe create through stencils and [5:11] : stamps. Good morning, Tori. Glad to see you, my friend. And I grabbed this feather. I picked it up when I was out [5:16] : on a walk the other day. And I might use it for just moving things around. I do [5:22] : have a couple of paint brushes, but I'm not sure if uh I'll use any paint brushes today. [5:29] : When you're playing with acrylic inks, one thing that you need a a lot of is a spray bottle. That's how we're going to [5:35] : activate the acrylic inks. So, if you're new to them, you're definitely going to want a spray bottle. But, let me go grab [5:42] : um a little bit of muslin real quick, and I'll be right back. So, hold tight and talk amongst yourselves. [6:15] : All right, the muslin was further away than I thought it was, so I quickly grabbed I think this is um this is like [6:22] : duck cloth. It's a heavyweight cotton fabric. And so [6:28] : you can hear me ripping and shredding here. And I'm just going to cut a couple [6:33] : of pieces off of this. And we'll talk about the inks work really well on [6:41] : fabric and these end up being great for making doll clothes, for journal covers [6:47] : or all kinds of other collage things. This is a little heavy for collage, but [6:55] : it would be great if I were just making a dress for a paper doll or a [7:01] : three-dimensional doll. It would be perfect. But mostly I just want to kind of see [7:07] : how our acrylic inks react. [7:13] : Okay, I know that's really loud on some fabric. So, I'm going to go ahead and break this up into some smaller pieces [7:20] : today just to make it a little easier to play with. [7:27] : And again, I shared at the beginning the thing that I love about acrylic inks. Um [7:32] : Tori, you'll remember this from the retreat last fall is just they're so [7:39] : flowy and fluid. If you don't love getting your hands super painty, this is a good one to wear plastic gloves. So, [7:47] : I'm going to experiment on a piece of photo paper. [7:52] : Never tried this before. You guys know I love to try things. I don't know if it'll stick, if it'll go through, uh [7:58] : what it'll do. I'm thinking maybe Okay, I will try [8:05] : putting Did I bring another small stencil? I grabbed big stencils. Okay, we're just going to try this one. [8:11] : Putting some of that ink through a stencil and let's just see what happens. And I think so much of the journey. And [8:20] : you got to really shake your acrylic inks if they've been sitting for a while. [8:27] : So much of the journey to reconnect to our inner artist is about connecting to [8:33] : the spirit of play, to kind of that, you know, sort of spirit of wonder [8:39] : that we often lose for a variety of reasons. [8:46] : I call this play with a purpose, right? like we're going to create painty papers [8:52] : that we're going to use, but we're also learning more about our materials. We're [8:57] : learning more about colors and palettes that we enjoy working with. So, I've got [9:04] : just a little bit of acrylic ink on here. A little bit goes a long way. And [9:10] : I'm gonna zoom in a little bit. This may get a [9:16] : little glary. So, you can watch the magic of how those spread. It's interesting. They're [9:23] : spreading very nicely here on this photo paper, but they're not flowing a [9:31] : ton. So, I'm going to come in. And this is so [9:38] : much just about experimentation. I love the little bloom that's happening [9:45] : here. A little more water. More water is [9:51] : better. [9:58] : Oh, hello and welcome. Thanks for stopping by. I've never done acrylic pore painting. That's one of those [10:06] : things that uh I didn't want to go down yet another [10:12] : rabbit hole. So, I've never tried acrylic pores. So, I'm looking at this and this is [10:17] : really pretty and there's a lot of paint and a lot of water there. So, one of the nice things that you can do with acrylic [10:24] : ink. So, I'm going to take a piece of that sulfite paper, [10:30] : and I'm just going to I don't want to smush it too much, but I'm going to gently press that in there. Pull up [10:39] : some of that color over the top of the stencil. And a Oh my gosh, so beautiful. [10:48] : Look at that. Won't that be amazing in a collage? Love it. All right, I'm going [10:53] : to start filling up my floor here with my painty papers. And I'm curious to see [11:01] : how the acrylic inks will dry on this photo paper. [11:09] : So, different look and feel there, but still really interesting. I'm going to [11:15] : set that over there for a second because I know there's still quite a bit of paint here. [11:22] : on this stencil. So, what happens if we come in [11:29] : and do I have my little breayer here? There it is. And see, so I'm not wasting [11:37] : any of that ink. Right. So, in some of these, it's very much like gel printing. [11:43] : And actually, I love all that color that just came off that stencil. Makes really [11:49] : fun patterns. And we got a pretty interesting print [11:56] : there. There wasn't as much of the yellow left as there was before, but [12:02] : still an interesting page. And again, we can continue. [12:10] : You guys are sweet. Thank you, Lorraine. To build up the color on this page. Now, [12:16] : what happens if I don't spray this with water and we just come in here with a [12:21] : breayer? You can get a completely different look [12:27] : and feel on the page. When you don't add water to it, the acrylic inks just sit, [12:34] : right? They just kind of stay put. It really is the water that moves it around [12:42] : and makes it magic. This paper is pretty thin, which is fine. I'm trying to move [12:48] : my keyboard and my mouse. My husband always gets mad at me about getting paint all over everything. Hola, Blanca. [12:55] : Good to see you. Yes, I'm having fun with these colors. Let's try. [13:04] : Me, too. Is such a magic and mystery. Look at that. When you drop the inks into the water, look at those fabulous [13:12] : blooms. And these are going to be ones that are going to take a while to dry. I did [13:18] : bring my craft dryer in case I want to move things around. [13:24] : And then this does start to look a little more like acrylic pore art. But [13:30] : you can see I've got some dark spots where I just kind of put that down on the page. One of the things I love about [13:36] : working with acrylic inks is once they're dry, it's really fun to go back [13:42] : over the top of them and add designs and patterns with gel pens or paint markers. [13:53] : I'm going to grab this little piece of cardboard here. There's still a lot of paint on here. So, you can also [14:01] : stamp with this, right? So, don't be afraid to really experiment. So, that's [14:07] : left a pattern there. Plus, we've got a little bit of pattern here. This feels [14:13] : like a first layer. This is getting closer to that end layer. [14:22] : And this one's kind of losing some of its interest as it all moves together. [14:28] : You can always just come back with a little more water. I'm going to grab a paper towel [14:34] : here. And sometimes it's helpful to remove paint as much as it is to add paint. And [14:45] : like watercolor, some of these things will dry lighter than they went down the [14:53] : first time. Can use that paper towel as a tool to kind of move that color around. Don't [15:01] : need a lot of fancy tools here, but this is making me happy. Feels like a really [15:06] : interesting bloom here. So, we're going to put that one over here to dry. [15:13] : And we'll play with that one some more. So, the photo paper is drying. [15:19] : Interesting, right? like I'm getting some different effects and marbling on [15:25] : the photo paper than I might on some other paper. So, just watching to see [15:31] : what's happening. Watching it stayed put a little bit more. It didn't move as much, but still really such a beautiful [15:40] : piece. I can feel that paper is quite wet, although it didn't go through the [15:46] : paper, which is good to know. So, this was a piece of glossy photo paper that [15:51] : I'm playing with. And I'm looking going, how much blue and [15:58] : green and yellow do I want? Maybe it's time to mix up my palette a little bit. [16:05] : And let's try a piece of fabric. So, the [16:10] : acrylic inks work really nicely on fabric. [16:16] : I've got this really old stencil here. Don't ask me where I've got it because I've had had it for so long and it [16:26] : doesn't quite fit in here. But we're going to figure out how to make that work. And I'm going to come in. This is [16:31] : one of my most favorite colors, flame orange. [16:36] : And we're going to just tip that jar up. [16:42] : That's the end of that one. Boohoo. And maybe just a tiny bit of this indigo [16:50] : mixed in there. And once we get it wet, I'm going to see if I can figure out how to get that stencil down [16:58] : in there a little better. And we're going to see what it does on this heavy duty paper. And then maybe [17:06] : just a little bit of this red earth. Again, these are some of my favorite [17:11] : colors. Little extra paint there. All right, I'm going to come in with the water. I've never done this on this [17:18] : heavyweight fabric before. So, we're going to see how well that fabric takes [17:24] : it. And my sense is I've got a lot on top here. So, let's go over the top. [17:32] : That'll help me push it down without getting it all over my hands as well. Not that I care about [17:40] : having painty hands. I'm actually happy having painty hands. [17:47] : Oh, it's so pretty. Look at that. Magic. [17:52] : Just magic. This would actually make a really lovely little journal cover. I [17:57] : can see myself adding some slow stitching to this. So, that one worked [18:05] : really well. And you just never know what's going to work, right? So, what happened underneath was we got a big fat [18:13] : old happy mess in here. And I'm not unhappy with the mess either because [18:20] : this mess is the part that eventually makes the best collage, right? Where the [18:26] : other one maybe is better for [18:33] : a complete project. This one is just going to make some pretty happy painty papers. [18:40] : Soak up some of that water and some of that color in there. [18:47] : Not much. Good. We got a lot of it out. Oh, but look. Pressing it down. We got some more of that stencil in there, [18:55] : which looks really, really lovely. I love that. And I'm looking at this and feeling like [19:02] : the colors are really dark and I want to brighten it up a little. So, I'm just going to come back with just some [19:09] : little tiny spots. This is pretty wet, but I'll probably still make it even a little wetter and maybe just bring in a [19:19] : little color. I could probably do that by put some white over those darks as [19:25] : well. And you can see as soon as I put it down how it's spreading there. [19:36] : All right, emptying things up for sure. Get those empties out of the way. [19:44] : And as I'm just being patient and kind of letting it sit, I thought, "Oh, I'm going to have to spray the yellow." But [19:50] : I can just kind of let it do its own or I can just activate that just a little [19:56] : bit more. [20:01] : And we can see this fabric is so thick that water isn't even going all the way [20:07] : through the fabric. But this has some interesting things happening. The other thing you can do with the acrylic inks [20:15] : when you've got some of those, you know, little splotches and you think, "Oh, I wish that would move a little bit more." [20:22] : Don't be afraid to just come in. This is an old pretty roughened brush, you know, [20:27] : that's been used a lot in acrylic painting. [20:33] : and just soften it right where that yellow went down. And that makes me a little happier when I'm looking at it to [20:41] : have those bits and pieces just feel a little [20:46] : softer. [20:51] : Yeah, it'll be fun to see what I end up doing with these for sure. All right. [20:57] : So, let's put that one and or let's look at them side by side. So, that's underneath the stencil. Press the [21:04] : stencil. Same colors, but two very different effects. This one kind of feels like alen. Um, what do you call [21:11] : it? Algae and lyken. Like here in Colorado, this is the color of lychen on [21:16] : the rocks, right? Which feels really beautiful and lovely. [21:23] : All right. What did I do with that little scrappy bit? So now we have this like really messy scrappy bit and we [21:29] : want to turn it into something so that nothing gets wasted. [21:35] : And I'm going to just make sure that I got all the paint off of this one. [21:42] : Grab another [21:47] : so that I can set it aside. Right. So, it's good to have just some little pieces around to play with. And [21:57] : what happens if we come in here and just get part of that stencil? [22:04] : I'm feeling a little obsessed with this stencil. I have another big one to play with also. [22:11] : And looking at the colors that I have down there, maybe I'll come in with some of this yellow ochre. [22:19] : And for me, this is just that sense of fearless play and experimentation [22:26] : that really helps us fall in love with our art, right? And rather than hoarding [22:34] : supplies or sitting on supplies, being afraid to use them because we don't [22:40] : exactly know how to use them, the only way to use them is to dive in, right? to [22:47] : literally just get in there and make a mess. It's just paint and paper. [22:53] : Everything is paint overable. Everything is reusable. [22:58] : So, I got one more piece of fabric here. I'm digging doing this on the fabric, [23:04] : which I knew I would. And this is not pre-washed. It's like a heavyweight [23:10] : cotton canvas, kind of like a duck cloth. And normally I would wash this [23:15] : ahead of time. Just makes that ink adhere better. Acrylic inks will dry [23:23] : permanent. So you can see that pattern coming through already. So these are [23:30] : great because they can be washed. If you're using fabric, they can be [23:36] : stitched on. You could paint over the the top of them more. So, another just [23:41] : lovely piece to add to our growing collection. [23:48] : And then let's see what happened. So, again, just super super cool. Okay, I'm [23:54] : going to stick that underneath. Let it get itself cleaned off. [24:01] : And I'm paying attention to a few things, to the patterns, to the colors, [24:06] : but I'm also uh paying attention to what draws my eye, right? What is it that I [24:12] : like? Which part of the process did I enjoy? What feels playful? What maybe [24:18] : makes my shoulders, you know, go up a little bit. Um, this was a funny piece [24:24] : of poster board. I don't even know what it was from, right? And that shiny [24:30] : paper, the ink stays put differently, which is really cool. [24:35] : All right, my floor over here is definitely filling up. [24:45] : Just going to clean this off a little bit. And I'm going to end up with this beautiful under paper as well, which [24:52] : will also make for great collage. And I'm going to set that one aside. [25:00] : I love even my tray is getting nice and inky. So, I'm really curious [25:08] : about using this artist weight heavyduty tissue paper [25:15] : with the acrylic inks. My intuition is that the ink is going to go right [25:22] : through the paper and uh get both sides really wet. But [25:29] : we'll see what happens. So, I'm going to do one that's just color and then we'll [25:34] : try again with a different stencil. [25:40] : Like I said, we probably won't go a full hour today. Just noticing that, you [25:46] : know, I don't know how exciting it is to watch me do an hour of play, but I could [25:52] : probably sit here for three or four hours and have a lot of fun with this. [26:00] : Let's see. Oh, interesting. Okay. Was being drawn to this [26:06] : sort of pinky color. It's called vivid violet. [26:16] : and we'll see what happens when we mix all of these colors together. Thanks, [26:22] : Tori. I appreciate you. [26:30] : Okay, this is like a more simple classic use of acrylic ink. Me too, Blanca. I'm [26:39] : looking forward to a weekend ahead where I don't have anything on my schedule except for a couple of playdates with [26:46] : girlfriends to do some play. So, this makes me really happy just as it is. And [26:52] : when this dries, this is going to be marvelous. So, [26:58] : let's see what the integrity of that is like. Definitely, it's that water went [27:04] : right through the other side. So, I'm going to actually pull this piece of paper and put it on the floor. And so, I [27:12] : can move this out of here. [27:18] : Not that my floor doesn't have paint all over it already, but when I pull it up, [27:24] : look at that. It feels much more sort of tie-dyed. And I think this one's going to be really interesting when it dries. [27:35] : And look at that magic that's happening in there. So, this was a inexpensive [27:42] : plastic tray that I found on Amazon. I think they came in sets of three and [27:47] : I've been having fun using it for all kinds of things. So, what if we used it for printing [27:55] : the paper instead of putting the ink on the paper? So, again, [28:01] : an experiment. I haven't tried this. I'm going to do one more piece of this [28:06] : paper. I'm going to do it pretty fast [28:12] : so maybe I don't get it quite as wet. So, we get a completely different but [28:18] : still very interesting look. Again, these are going to be magic with that [28:24] : transparency when they dry. But I don't really love the way the the [28:30] : water is going through them and they're getting so so wet. We'll see if it [28:35] : sticks to the underper getting my hands all painty which makes me happy. [28:41] : And we still have all this lovely. We'll bring back. Okay, this feels [28:47] : really fun. A little sort of print making. very different than just putting the ink [28:54] : down right on to the paper. [29:00] : This is definitely uh lack of control here. Don't know what's going to happen. [29:09] : Just add a little bit more water in there. And now I'm going to [29:17] : put a stencil down. and see if we can pick up color through [29:25] : the stencil. Definitely want to get some more [29:30] : paint down on some of this sulfite paper because I love this sulfite paper. I [29:35] : just buy this on Amazon and like packs of 500. Very inexpensive. It's nicer [29:42] : than printer paper and thin enough to make great collage. [29:50] : So, I'm not seeing paint coming through here. So, that stencil may be too old [29:56] : and too thick. Totally. That did not work at all. Interesting. But what's [30:01] : going to happen is when I pull this up, that's going to be interesting. [30:07] : But we're going to have some paint on this stencil itself. Looks like it picked up some of the color. So, I'm [30:14] : just going to put that piece of paper right back down on there. [30:22] : Lack of control is so freeing. So freeing. So one of the things that I do [30:29] : and Tori is a member is my sisterhood of wisdom and wonder which you can find on [30:35] : my website at manetryarden.com. And yesterday we were painting trees. [30:40] : And I think the number one comment was that just that same that freedom of [30:46] : letting go and learning to paint like a kindergartener. [30:52] : All right. Didn't get a ton of paint, but got some really interesting. So, this is where we start to look at little [31:00] : bits and pieces of this. And I have some options. I could spray this with some paint. I can let it dry. and maybe add [31:08] : another layer, which is what I'm leaning towards. Still didn't work quite like I [31:14] : want it to. So, I'm going to try that again, but I'm going to get a little more [31:20] : water in here. And I'm going to be even a little [31:26] : more intentional about getting this whole stencil colored up. [31:36] : And I'm being mindful of like how much can I do this before I just end up with [31:41] : mud. [31:47] : Try it again. I love this stencil. [32:04] : You can see how painty my hands are. [32:10] : Little better coverage that time. A little few more purples. I can see how those colors are starting to blend and [32:17] : flow. So, that feels really pretty. And I'm loving the colors. [32:24] : And we're just gonna clean this off here. You can tell I don't clean my [32:30] : stencils. Like it's just not necessary, but I do tend to, you know, wipe some of [32:36] : that paint off. Set that one aside. Okay, look at that magic in there. [32:44] : So, this is another sheet of that photo paper. [32:50] : And let's see. [32:57] : Get some more of those fun blooms happening in there. [33:06] : This is kind of like doing a roar shock, right? Oh, that's on that photo paper. [33:12] : Look at that. Really magical. And it's drying really fast on that [33:18] : photo paper. So interesting. So, I'm going to stick that down and just get a [33:24] : little more right in the center. And I can see where I'm starting to get [33:31] : some browns in there. I kind of like the white in the center, but it's [33:37] : interesting for that the way it mix. There's no pink [33:44] : over here. So, let's just turn this around the other way. [33:50] : and get a little of these other colors in here. [33:56] : Okay, I'm digging the reaction of the photo paper dipped in there. Getting [34:02] : just some magic sort of tie-dye effect happening here. [34:10] : That is fun. [34:15] : And we're going to just kind of clean this up. Kind of like you do when you're working with a gel plate where you get [34:22] : to a point where you got to clean your gel plate. I'm going to clean this up a [34:27] : little bit. Part of me just wants to not do any paper and just do all that [34:35] : luscious fabric because I love how it turned out. Oh, look. It's a landscape. [34:40] : Look at that. Fascinating. I've got my mountain there. I've got some trees. Maybe a nice little [34:46] : pond here. Like, this is the magic of learning to see, learning to play, [34:52] : learning to experiment with our supplies and materials. [34:59] : And now I have a very messy studio. So, I think I'm going to clean this up [35:07] : and go back to working on paper a little bit. So, I'm going to start with that [35:15] : paper towel is starting to dry in there, you know, [35:22] : and there was already paint in here as well, too. But because it's [35:29] : a waterbased thing, as soon as I spray water on it, it'll reactivate. [35:35] : Little baby wipe action there. Not perfectly clean. [35:42] : And I'm doing this in a small space, but I actually really love um doing this on [35:48] : really large sheets of paper. It works really well to cover up large areas. [35:56] : Let's see. Let's come in with some of this indigo. [36:06] : Maybe some of this yellow ochre. [36:14] : And what happens when these two start to blend? That indigo looks black when you [36:20] : start. So, I can see there's some chunks of that ochre in there where the [36:26] : sediment was in the bottom of the page. And this is where we can start to play [36:32] : with it a little bit. I've got a little fan brush here. Maybe I want to move [36:38] : some of that color around. [36:47] : Oh, now it feels like a dragon. This indigo I love because it's so much [36:53] : fun to draw, add zenangle patterns to over the the end. And I'm noticing, you [37:01] : know, these sort of chunky bits of the that yellow ochre needs some maybe some [37:08] : water added or to get shaken up a little bit. And what happens? Yeah, me too. Loving [37:15] : this combination. If we just put a little bit of white. [37:22] : Let's see if we can get just a little bit of white. Maybe way down in the bottom down there. There we go. [37:36] : And they start to look like agots as they spread and grow. [37:48] : I don't know what those bubbles will do, but it'll be fun to sort of discover that. [37:56] : Okay, so this one feels really interesting. And I think I need to just like let it [38:04] : do its own thing and see what happens when it dries and what the effects are. [38:13] : You saw a beagle. Fun. It's probably gone now. Good morning, Ann. Good to see you. [38:20] : All right. They're all just different and [38:25] : interesting. And then when I pick them up, the paint moves and it changed yet [38:31] : again. So, this time I'm going to grab my tray [38:38] : here. [38:43] : And I'm going to grab just a piece of paper to play with. I'll zoom out a [38:49] : little bit for this one so we can see both and play with some of these stamps that I have and see what happens with [38:58] : the stamps. [39:03] : And I'm going to be using some of my handmade stamps. [39:12] : 's feeling a little it's got a little bubbles stuck in the top that don't want to pop. [39:19] : This one's definitely getting down to the end. Okay, now we're really getting painty [39:25] : fingers. I even put an apron on this morning because I knew I was going to make a big happy mess. So, we should get [39:32] : some lovely purples out of this one. [39:38] : This paper here that I'm using right now, Ann, is a sulfite paper. Um, you [39:44] : can buy it on Amazon. I'm sure that Dick Blick has it, too. You can get it in stacks of 500. Little nicer. It's 9 [39:52] : by12, and it's a little nicer than a um just a printer paper, but it's thin [39:59] : enough to make great collage. So, let's see what kind of magic. You [40:07] : can never have too many collage papers with dots on them. Just saying. So, [40:14] : maybe we'll just fill this page with dots. So, this is working well. It's nice and [40:21] : juicy. So, the dots are coming out in all those beautiful colors, and they [40:28] : aren't perfect, which is what I want when I'm stamping. So, I think I'm going [40:33] : to fill this one. We'll get some that maybe have a little [40:38] : less ink on them because it just creates [40:44] : Yeah. Somewhere on the channel, Blanca, I think when we first got started a couple of years ago, we made the stamps. [40:51] : I don't know if you remember doing that, but we made our own. These are just made out of fun foam. Love making my own [40:59] : stamps. Okay, that is a very very happy piece of paper. This is the kind [41:05] : of stuff that makes such fabulous collage for our doll making and [41:10] : definitely for art journal play as well. [41:17] : Do I have another I wish I had brought more of that photo paper over. Okay, this is really fun. And I'm trying to [41:23] : decide, do I want to do more with this or just uh keep the paper as it is [41:31] : because it's really interesting. This one also will make fabulous collage. [41:39] : And I'm being I'm lifting this one carefully because I don't want too much flow because I really love the the [41:44] : patterns that are there. And let's try we'll do one more. [41:54] : Maybe we'll try some stamping on some of this tissue. I've got a couple of layers of the tissue here. I'm going to clean [42:02] : that stencil. Get all of that ink off of there. Oh, those are kind of fun, too. [42:08] : Might go over them with something else. All right. Where's my I'm loving this [42:16] : super bright yellow today. Happy happy colors, [42:28] : but I want things to kind of maybe feel like the same family. [42:36] : So, I could use this pinky purple one with this one because it's the same [42:41] : blue. So, I'm creating a little consistency and congruence across the pages. [42:51] : And these two together are going to make an exquisite green. [42:56] : So, lots of water. I'm glad I decided to use the tray. [43:04] : Although, don't tell Brad I'm also getting water on my keyboard, [43:10] : which is probably not a good thing. Usually, when I'm using something messy like this, I try to tuck my keyboard [43:17] : away. So, let me tuck that away a little bit more. And got popped up windows. Get rid of [43:26] : those windows. Go away. All right. Interesting. So, I lost some [43:32] : of the blue in there because that yellow kind of mixed. So, I'm going to come in with maybe a little [43:40] : different blue here. Still getting lots of pretty magic [43:47] : happening. And I'm going to come in with some of these spirals. [43:54] : Love spirals. Can never have too many spirals. So, [43:59] : this one, the second and third prints are better with a little bit less paint [44:04] : on them. And I'm getting some fun things happening in here as well. And this is a [44:14] : better approach I think to this tissue paper rather than completely soaking it [44:19] : with water is to um do it on paper [44:25] : or to do the stamping or through a stencil. [44:31] : And let's get some more of those. [44:37] : Maybe some more dots in between. I'm just going to make a big happy mess [44:44] : here. And again, it just creates, we're looking for these to be just abstract [44:49] : and lots of fun visual interest. So, this doesn't need to be perfect, but [44:56] : what this is going to give me is some little pieces of collage paper that I'm [45:01] : going to be like, "Oh, that little piece." And oh, you know, little viewfinder there. Let's look at the [45:06] : little pieces of this. [45:11] : And I wonder if we can do this stamping [45:17] : technique on our fabric. So, let me snip another piece of fabric here. [45:29] : Shredding fabric is so satisfying. I'm not really sure what the fabric is. [45:35] : I can't remember what I bought. I bought it on clearance at Jo-Ann's when Jo-Ann's was going out of business, [45:43] : sadly. Okay, let's do that. [45:59] : And you notice I didn't bring like my I have a huge selection of stencils as I'm sure many of you do. It's like we don't [46:06] : need to play with all of them. Some repetition is good. So, I actually [46:11] : really like how that came out. Just that little bit of color and a little bit of [46:17] : suggestion of that leafy stencil, but it's telling me this isn't as wet as I [46:24] : thought this was. So, we're just going to add a little more water to that. [46:31] : We're going to do the reverse on here. [46:42] : Lovely. So, the stenciling or stamping on here worked really well. Also, so [46:51] : that's a gorgeous piece by itself right there. See if we can maybe put some of these [46:59] : polka dots down at the end. It's funny, the yellow is kind of all [47:06] : dried up. So, super fun piece. Again, just imagine this wrapped around the [47:11] : edge of a journal or as the even the background for a tag for one of our [47:19] : paper dolls. So, this one definitely feels like we're just gonna [47:25] : go for it in here and maybe get just a little more color on it. use up some of the paint on the [47:34] : paper. I'm wanting it to have more yellow. And [47:39] : so what I'm noticing is it looks wet, but the yellow in my [47:45] : tray here is dry. So, I'm just gonna come right back into this piece [47:58] : and maybe add a little bit of yellow in there. [48:04] : Get that nice and wet. And then we'll just set that aside to dry. So, definitely a fun piece to do something [48:11] : with. Okay, I'm digging the fabric today even more than the peepers. [48:18] : So, you can see where I pressed the stencil in there that I got some interesting patterns where it was kind [48:25] : of almost dry. And I'm wondering if I can do that and pull up pull some of the [48:32] : paint out so we get kind of that reverse [48:37] : stencil effect in there. We'll see what happens when that dries. [48:44] : If we keep some of that wonderful marks in there or not. [48:52] : Haven't used that fun one. That should do some interesting things. [48:58] : All right. So, this one when I pick it up, it should stay pretty put because it's pretty dry. But this one again is [49:06] : just these, you know, you start to look at like that right there. or this little [49:11] : bit of leaves, right? And we start to look at those little pieces and elements. [49:18] : And this is where I'm like, I don't want to stop making, but I have, you know, a [49:25] : dozen sheets on the floor over here. So, this is one of the ones that I made [49:32] : at the beginning that is starting to dry well. So now you can see you get a [49:38] : lovely watercolor look from doing this, but because it's acrylic ink, it dries [49:46] : permanent. So this one is definitely one of my favorites. There's quite a few [49:51] : over here that once they dry are going to be super super cool. [49:58] : And I think I'll pause there because like I said, I feel like I have now this huge stash of painty papers. But I think [50:07] : my favorites for today were definitely coming into [50:13] : play with these fabrics that will definitely get morphed and changed [50:23] : into something else. maybe for a threedimensional doll or a journal [50:29] : cover. But loving this sort of, you know, heavy sort of canvasy cotton ended [50:37] : up working really well on the colors. And then also found that I really loved [50:45] : the photo paper and how it dried and it moved very very differently on that [50:52] : photo paper than it did on some of the other bits and pieces. [51:00] : And then some of the ones, oops, these are getting all over each other because [51:06] : this one is still really wet. you know, some of these with just those different [51:11] : colors, right? And letting that abstract look at those drips and drops from where [51:17] : I moved it when these dry. They're going to be so magical. Huh. I wish I could [51:24] : stay for another hour or two. Busy, busy day uh ahead. So, I love starting my day [51:32] : here with all of you and starting it off with some play, especially when I get my [51:39] : hands all happy painty. So, thanks everybody for joining me for another [51:45] : episode of Painting in Your PJs with Manette. appreciate each and every one [51:51] : of you and I will see you guys all live next week where we're going to create [51:57] : painty papers with watercolor or water soluble materials. Haven't quite figured [52:04] : out exactly what I want to do next week. But you know me, by the time uh Thursday rolls around, I will have it figured [52:11] : out. So, have a beautiful rest of your day, my friends. Got to find my mouse here. And thank you for joining me live. [52:18] : Thank you for watching the replay and uh I look forward to seeing you soon. Have [52:23] : a great great day. Bye everybody.
