What if you didn't need to finish the year strong? The benefits of finishing softly.

seasons·Minette Riordan·Dec 5, 2025· 3 minutes

As a veteran entrepreneur of 20+ years, I've been told over and over how important it is to finish the year strong, to push, to strive, to rush...

As a mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, community volunteer, et cetera - the holidays always invite you to do more for others.

The end of a year naturally invites us to complete projects, to release the clutter collected, to make a plan for the new year...

The list of ways that we are encouraged to finish strong is long.

As I was doing some end of year reflection over the Thanksgiving holiday and thinking about conversations with a dear friend, I asked myself:

"What if strong isn’t the way you end this year?

What if you finished softly—with reverence, not resolutions?

With rest and silence instead of striving."

My entire body exhaled the moment this question occurred to me.

What does it mean to finish the year softly?

To finish the year softly is to come home to your essence.

To remember that you are not a project to complete.

You are a garden to tend. A story still unfolding.

For me, finishing softly means releasing the grasp of old patterns:

  • no longer pushing for visibility or validation...
  • learning I don’t need achievement to feel enough...
  • that the woman who once gathered knowledge like armor, can now let it all compost into wisdom.

This softness is not weakness.

It’s sovereignty.

What does sovereignty look like?

It looks like:

  • Saying no without guilt or explanation.
  • Doing what makes me happy during the holiday season, not what others expect.
  • Leaving some projects in process (the end of the year is an arbitrary deadline after all!)
  • Letting the year end like a breath, not a bang.

Maybe your year, too, has been filled with change.

With stirrings you don’t yet have language for.

If so, you’re not alone. You’re in sacred company.

Together, let’s reclaim December not as a sprint—but as a sanctuary.

A time to rest. Reflect. Re-root in what is true.

This is your invitation to finish the year in the most radical way possible: softly.

To help you finish the year softly, here are 16 end of year journal prompts. These are not goal-setting questions—they're invitations into reverence, remembering, and deep listening.

Grab your journal, a warm beverage and sit by the fire. Listen for what wants to emerge next. Let these prompts guide you on a journey to finishing 2025 softly.

With deep love and soft strength,

Minette 💜
